ALIED Women's Health Acupuncture Course

Acupuncture Course Development

As with most ALIED courses, the content of this course will be developed to meet the needs of the delegates. The Tutor will discuss with the course organiser what she/he requires to be covered. Then, at the course itself, the content will be adapted to the needs and abilities of the delegates.

Typical Course Content

This is a two-day specialist course for Chartered Physiotherapists working in the field of Women's Health. Ideally participants should be versed in an understanding of Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) approach to Acupuncture beyond pain relief. However, this is not mandatory and all efforts will be made to accommodate different experience and knowledge and to introduce participants in some of the areas of TCM philosophy without losing sight of the evidence for Acupuncture efficacy within the Western evidence based model. This course will provide the delegates with an integrated approach in order to manage some complex conditions presented within the management of Women's Health. This course provides a theoretical explanation using an evidence-based structure to demonstrate the physiological mechanisms occurring within some systemic, musculoskeletal and pain presentations together with the management of systemic dysfunction.

Learning Objectives

• To enhance and update the participants knowledge of Acupuncture in Women's Health pertaining to:
  • Myofascial pain and pelvic pain
  • Continence and incontinence
  • Urgency / frequency syndrome
  • Dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhea
  • Menopause and anxiety management

• A practical and refresher component in Acupuncture to:
  • Enhance clinical reasoning skills and offer a wider range of clinical tools to manage these conditions levels
  • Enhance training skills
  • Enhance anatomy and palpatory skills
  • Review safety, contraindications and precautions
  • Enhance medico-legal aspects of consent and documentation
  • Incorporate Acupuncture techniques within the more global picture of Women's Health
  • Emphasise the emotional management of these conditions.

Learning Outcomes

• Assess and interpret syndromes and dysfunction pertaining to:
  • Continence and incontinence
  • Urgency / frequency syndrome
  • Dysmenorrhoea, amenorrhea
  • Menopause and anxiety management
  • Myofascial pain and pelvic pain
  • Enhance palpatory, training, needling and manual skills
  • Effectively develop a comprehensive management approach to complex syndromes
  • To integrate Western and TCM approaches into clinical practice
  • To review and access the evidence and literature to support chosen protocols in the management of Women's Health

The course content will include Path physiology of:

• Incontinence
• Menstrual dysfunction
• Menopause
• Anxiety and stress
• Physiology of Acupuncture
• Physiology of Myofascial Pain
• Integration of clinical reasoning within Acupuncture
• Evidence to support Acupuncture protocols
• Integration of Acupuncture skills with physiotherapy management
• Assessment and development of treatment protocols on patients

Prerequisites

Delegates must have Foundation Acupuncture training to current AACP standards
