Introduction
This course will give participants an overview of the pathogenesis and aetiology of Inflammatory Bowel disease [IBD] and Irritable Bowel Syndrome [IBS] with reference to:
- The anatomy and neuroanatomy of the Gastrointestinal Tract,
- Sympathetic innervation and responses of the Enteric System,
- Role of neuropeptides,
- Noradrenergic nerves,
- Humeral response and IBD,
- Humeral response of IBS,
- Medical Management Model.
The Western Medical Model of Acupuncture intervention
The course will present western evidence based medicine [Rijnierse et al
2007; Spiller et al 2007; Diehl 1999] adhering closely to the Guidelines of the British Society of Gastroenterology [2007] classification of IBD and IBS to:
- Definitions and Classification,
- Clinical features,
- Manning criteria,
- Rome III diagnostic criteria,
- Psychological features,
- Mechanisms of IBD and IBS,
- Central sensitisation,
- Visceral hypersensitivity,
- Stress response,
- Medical management in Primary Care,
- Pharmacological management,
- Psychological management,
- Myofascial trigger point management,
- Segmental Acupuncture management.
- Sympathetic inhibition,
- Parasympathetic excitation,
- Gut motility and blood supply.
The Traditional Chinese Model of pattern identification and differentiation
The course will present the Chinese medical model [CMM] of clinical reasoning incorporating:
- Eight Principles - Blood, QI,
- Clinical reasoning in pattern differentiation - Listening to the patient,
- Auricular Acupuncture for self-management and empowerment of patient.
- Stress and Anxiety,
- Meridian influence,
- Organ influence,
- Interrelationship with:
- Chronic Pain,
- Fibromyalgia,
- Treating the root and not the branch.
At each stage of the course very effort will be made to marry the two models with reference to current evidence and up to date research to present evidence based, effective management of this complex pain state. Delegates will be required to have:
- A working knowledge of TCM and pattern differentiation,
- Access to patients with this condition in order successfully to complete a case history submission,
- Some previous experience of treating stomach disorders.
Indicative Acupuncture Content
The course will provide delegates with a number of educational styles to facilitate learning:
- Power Point presentation and lectures,
- Discussion and analysis of case scenarios in action groups,
- Practical needling,
- Presentation of case for problem solving skills,
- Submission of a 2,500 word case study of a patient presenting with IBD or IBS.
