Acupuncture in the Treatment of Depression, Stress & Anxiety
Introduction
This is a one day post-basic training course designed to introduce Physiotherapists to the management of mild depression and anxiety within Physiotherapy. The course will offer both a Western evidenced base approach whilst incorporating TCM philosophy within a clinical reasoning paradigm.
The course has been designed with the following guidelines:
Theoretical Content
A medical model of anxiety and depression,
The Sympathetic nervous system,
The Parasympathetic nervous system,
Neurotransmitter dysfunction,
Biopsycho-social model,
Compulsive obsessive disorders,
Phobia,
Neurosis,
Situation anxiety.
A TCM model of anxiety and depression,
Definition of Shen,
Classical Model of Anxiety,
Endogenous Depression.
Indicative Acupuncture Content
This course utilises a variety of teaching strategies and learning approaches.
Core material will be delivered in lead lectures,
The core material will be synthesised in
Practical workshops,
Action groups,
Student led discussion,
Problem solving skills,
Self directed learning is facilitated through a case study submission.
Submission of a 2,500 word case study of a patient presenting with a condition relevant to this course.
The use of patients will facilitate student clinical and theoretical knowledge within the clinical reasoning process.
